1000 TIMES: REWRITING HERITAGE
(2024 – ongoing)
Ink drawings on Lokta paper
Dimensions 75 x 50 x 0,2cm
Informed by Marianne Hirsch's concept of "postmemory,” this series explores the ways in which the memories of one generation shape the perceptions and practices of those that follow. "I Write it Down 1000 Times to Rewrite My Heritage" serves as an archive, capturing the "collective emotional residue" that emerges from the choices and traumas of past generations. This project examines the dynamics of memory and the profound effects of intergenerational trauma on contemporary parenting practices.
The drawings are created through the repetitive act of inscribing pivotal promises—such as “I will not hit my children” and “I will not prioritize obedience and silence over open communication.” This deliberate process results in each piece becoming a unique record, layered with ink until the words become obscured, symbolizing the weight of collective emotional experiences that often remain unspoken.
Integral to this project is community participation. Young mothers from the Balkans contribute their promises regarding their children's well-being through informal interviews and anonymous submissions. As a result, each piece of handmade paper transforms into an archive, preserving individual narratives while reflecting shared aspirations for healthier familial environments.
