ABOUT
Born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia in 1987
Lives and works in Berlin since 2012
My practice examines repetition, maintenance, and care work as conditions that shape both intimate and social life. Care is not a private emotion, but a form of labor that is disproportionately carried out by women, while remaining unpaid, expected, and taken for granted.
My work examines how these conditions operate within ongoing patriarchal structures and how they settle into everyday life, into domestic space and the body. Through installation and performance, I construct spatial situations in which these dynamics become tangible. The works move between intimacy and constraint, operating through systems that require endurance, adjustment, and constant self-regulation.
BIO
Ana Kotar Škarjak (b. 1987, Novo Mesto, Slovenia) is an artist based in Berlin. Her work examines how subjectivity is formed through repetition, material organization, and spatial control. Using installation, scent, and everyday materials, she constructs environments in which discipline operates without a clear point of origin- emerging through alignment, containment, and accumulation.
She is the recipient of the LJUBAW Art Grant (2025) and a Visual Arts Research Grant from the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion (2025).
